Nestled along Frederick Road, just past the fire house, stands a charming little abode known as the Santa House, accompanied by a majestic Christmas tree. Here is where Catonsville and the surrounding areas come together on the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year to start the joyous holiday season. In celebratory fashion we gather together to enjoy festive entertainment, to light the Catonsville Christmas tree, and welcome Santa Claus to town.
In 1994 the magic and joy of Catonsville’s Annual Tree Lighting began. Inspired by childhood memories of going to see the beautifully lit trees in Edmondson Village, Catonsville resident Greg Morgan decided to start a new community tradition in the heart of town. Accompanied by his family, Greg planted the first Christmas tree in Catonsville next to the historic fire house. This act of community spirit laid the foundation for what has become a beloved holiday event for so many to enjoy.
In 2001, the Weinkam family joined the effort, constructing the Santa House. This spirited haven was created with materials and labor generously donated by local residents and businesses. The Santa House has since become a cherished symbol of the holiday season in Catonsville.
In 2023 the Morgan and Weinkam families entrusted the future of the Christmas tree, Santa House, and annual tree lighting traditions to the Catonsville Men's Civic Association (CMCA) where a dedicated Santa House Committee was formed, co-chaired by CMCA member Rick Webb and his wife Jessica.
Under the CMCA and the Santa House Committee's enthusiastic leadership, along with support from the community through sponsorships and donations, the traditions will continue to bring joy to the community!
The Santa House's annual tree lighting event and Santa's weekend visits are made possible by the generous support we receive from the community. We welcome donations and sponsors.
